The AIGA InShow, a statewide design competition in South Carolina, has built a reputation of being a tough competition and one that designers are eager to have their work selected for. The show, now in its 17th year, began in 1995 with a simple concept of wanting to create an awards show for “designers.”
Prior to the founding of AIGA South Carolina in 2004, the Columbia Communicating Arts Society (CCAS), an independent organization providing programming for designers, photographers and other creative professionals in Columbia, created the “InShow.”
The competition was designed to be the “Anti-Addy's,” meaning that instead of having a huge category structure with many tiers and multiple awards, InShow’s concept was a simple one: You’re either “In” or you're “Out."
The entries, due in late September, include four broad categories: Print, Interactive, Broadcast and Student.
Entry drop-off sites are set up in Columbia, Charleston and Greenville to make it easy for designers to submit their work.
Once submitted, work is divided up by category and three judges from outside of the South Carolina market decide their fate by judging it either “In” or “Out.” Judges are not given quotas, or rigid judging requirements, so the show totals and types of entries vary from year to year.
WHO GETS IN?
From all entries submitted, jurors will select work they deem worthy of being a part of the AIGA SC InShow. Jurors will be able to select as many or as few entrants as they feel appropriate. From the winners, jurors may select entries to receive Special Jurors Awards for outstanding work. Jurors will also select a Best of Show Howie Award winner which will recognize the most outstanding piece of work among all of the entries selected for the AIGA SC InShow.
WHAT IS ELIGIBLE?
Advertising agencies, corporate marketing departments or independent professionals such as designers, copywriters, illustrators and photographers and students in these fields are eligible for consideration. Entries must have been produced on or after September 1, 2010 and created by designers residing in the state of South Carolina.
The student category is intended for work that is completed by an undergraduate, graduate, community college or high school student for class projects, internships, volunteer and pro bono projects or for student organizations and publications. Any work, even if completed by a student, that is done as a freelance or professional endeavor, should be entered in the professional category.
WHAT IS THE COST?
Entry fees for AIGA members are $30 per entry, $10 for student members. Fees for non-members are $40 per entry, $20 for student non-members. Campaigns are considered one entry.
WHAT IS THE METHOD OF PAYMENT?
Payment may be made by cash or check and must be submitted with entries. Make checks payable to AIGA SC. Online payments are now available! Click here to pay Online. No entries will be accepted without payment or proof of payment.

Print entries include everything printed including offset, letterpress, engraved or silkscreen. Print mediums range from posters to brochures to product packaging.
Mounting is not required for items that can fit in a 9” x 12” or 10” x 13” envelope. One entry per envelope. Envelopes may be paper or plastic. Attach a completed entry form securely to the outside of the envelope. Please be sure to write a brief description of the objective of the entry or anything specific you would like the judges to consider while judging your work.
Larger entries should be mounted. Mount the actual piece on a 20” x 30” illustration board vertically. Oversized printed or bound materials should be placed in an acetate sleeve securely attached to the front of the board. Secure a completed entry form to the back top right corner of the board with the background information panel only overlapping onto the front of the entry. If the entry is too large to mount on a 20” x 30” board, an 8” x 10” photographic print is acceptable.
Interactive
All website entries must include a live, active URL reference. Please include at least one printed screenshot with the live URL with site title displayed. If a site fails to work, experiences functional problems, or fails to open, the entry will be disqualified. Websites will be viewed on a Macintosh Operating System. AIGA SC makes no guarantees as to the status of general Internet infrastructure at the time of judging. Websites must have gone live on or after September 1, 2010.
CD-ROM entries must include a copy of the CD or DVD disc and must submit screen shots as described above.
Broadcast
Submit television entries on DVD in an (9” x 12”) envelope. Attach a completed entry form to the outside of the envelope and clearly label the disc itself. Campaigns must include each spot sequentially on the same disc.
Student
The student category is intended for work that is completed by an undergraduate, graduate, community college or high school student for class projects, internships, volunteer and pro bono projects or for student organizations and publications. Any work, even if completed by a student that is done as a freelance or professional endeavor should be entered in the professional category.
Campaigns
Campaigns may be entered in envelopes or mounted. If envelopes are used, make sure that the total number of pieces in the campaign is listed on the entry form. If mounted, work entered as a campaign should be placed on several separate boards hinged with black tape and clearly marked as a campaign (1 of 3, 2 of 3, etc...) on the back.
Campaigns can be contained within one category or can crossover categories. Please make sure that when you are filling out the manifest forms, if the entry is a campaign it is marked as such. For example if it is a print campaign label it with the code: PC. If a broadcast campaign: BC. If Interactive: IC. If the campaign crosses over more than one category, please label it: MC (for mixed campaign).
